Here are some options to consider when you feel appropriate to push back;
“Can you go to the project
meeting”
1. Say no with an alternative
“I’m not going to be able to make the meeting today, but
I’m happy to follow up with the minutes and actions?”
2. Don’t absolve yourself of responsibility
“I am happy to help where I can but since I’m not
directly involved in this work, I may not be the best-
placed person to attend this one”
3. Always be clear and unambiguous
“I can see why you asked but I don’t
feel it’s a relevant meeting for me to attend in this phase –
perhaps when the project has moved to the next stage?”
Ineffective meetings
At their best, meetings can be a great way to
reach agreement and achieve a common goal.
At their worst, they can become a tedious
waste of everyone’s time. Meetings require
accountability, trust and respect for people’s
time.
Consider the fact that a 1.5 hour meeting is 20%
of an average working day and 46% believe at
least some of the meetings they attend are a
waste of time.
